Interesting Facts About Cedar Wood Railings
By Andrew Caxton

Beautiful natural color can be added to your home without a major overhaul if you use cedar railings. Cedar wood is available in both red or white cedar, and is a popular choice for those who want wood railings. Here is some information about cedar wood that will help you to choose the right railings.

Cedar is an excellent wood that is naturally low maintenance. A coat of lacquer, applied every three or so years, will keep it protected and looking good. A job such as this is easy to do and will only take about fifteen or twenty minutes for every 1000 square foot of rail area. This will keep cedar looking good for years.

The cedar tree is similar to the fir tree, and grows in many parts of the world. Although it is native to the Himalayas, it is now found in many countries, especially around the Mediterranean Sea. Cedar trees can grow to as much as fifty meters, and have leaves of up to three feet long. The trunk of a mature cedar tree can be upwards of two feet in diameter. The various types of cedar are: Atlas Cedar, Cyprus Cedar, Turkish Cedar, Lebanese Cedar and Deodar Cedar.

Cedar can be obtained at most home improvement centers or lumber yards, so if you want to have a do-it-yourself
project and build cedar railings, you can get your supplies easily. Precut sections of cedar can be purchased and all you have to do is install them. You just give your lumberyard the measurements of the deck where the railings will be installed, and he can calculate the sections required and ship them to your home. Once you have the
sections, you just have to assemble them according to the instructions. You may have to do some trimming, but if
you have given the right dimensions to the supplier, there should not be much of that, and besides, cedar is very easy to work with, so it will not be difficult, even if you do not have a lot of experience as a do-it-yourselfer.

The main thing to be concerned about when caring for cedar railings is that they do not have water standing on the wood. Cedar gives you the beauty of fine-grained wood, along with its lovely aroma. King Solomon's Temple in Jerusalem shows extensive use of cedar that is still standing today. Wood that has lasted three thousand years is a good testamony to the durability of cedar. As long as cedar is not directly exposed to moisture, and with a
little tender loving care, your cedar railings will last a long time as well.
