Beam Fasteners

Beam Fasteners
By Peter Emerson

Fasteners that are used for holding wooden beams together are called beam fasteners. Beams are usually used for holding up roofs and other heavy structures and are important for the strength of a house. Beam fasteners need to be strong so as to enable the crossing beams to adhere to each other.

Beam fasteners are L shaped hinges that hold the wooden beams or planks together thus increasing the strength of the structure itself. These fasteners are available in many sizes and qualities. The suitability of a fastener can be determined only by the purpose that it is going to serve. A cedar beam needs fewer fasteners compared to mahogany beams that are large and heavy. Therefore, the type of the wood that is used for constructing a beam also dictates the type of fastener that is needed for the beam.

Non-conformity in a beam fastener can be the cause of terrible accidents if proper care is not taken while selecting the appropriate fastener. If the beam fastener is not made according to the guidelines laid down by the Fastener Quality Act (FQA) that regulates the use and production of fasteners, then it may cause serious physical injury to the buyer or a construction worker.

Beam fasteners can also be custom made to suit industrial purposes. The huge structures and massive machinery that industries use require fasteners that have enormous tensile strength. Metal shearing and corrosion are the biggest concern in an industrial environment and beam fasteners that are used in industries must be manufactured according to the proper legal guidelines provided by the Fastener Quality Act.

Beam fasteners that are used in construction of residential buildings differ from the fasteners used in industrial buildings. Residential beam fasteners do not require the same tensile strength that is a pre requisite for industrial buildings but are still regulated by the Fastener Quality Act. This is because any structure depends on the beams that hold it up and the beams depend on the fasteners for strength. Furthermore, the lives of people residing in a building also hinge on the fasteners in an indirect manner.
