A building contractor can be termed as an expert from the construction industry who hires skilled and unskilled workers to construct a financed project. A building contractor is usually required to be licensed by an examining board. Only licensed contractors are allowed to bid for projects. The bid is in turn based on the estimated costs of the total construction , which could include the wages of the subcontractors , laborers, and the cost of the building materials, to mention only a few.

Civil and structural engineers are therefore found to make good building contractors, since they have in-depth knowledge of the construction industry and the various construction processes. Apart from the engineering knowledge, one also needs to have good business acumen to be a successful building contractor.
