Pot Belly Wood Stoves
By Peter Emerson

Wood stoves were used in ancient America for many household and general purposes. A wood stove is a device, which is normally used in the kitchens for the heating of food, keeping it warm and making it palatable. Different kinds of materials were used for making stoves such as various metals and cast iron. Some of them were also decorated beautifully to make them aesthetically appealing.

Old wood stoves are termed as antique pieces and are protected by law for the preservation of history. Some antique wooden stoves can be used for the purpose of heating and cooking even today. One of the many types of wooden stoves available is the potbelly wood stove. These are shorter, squatter and smaller than conventional stoves and can be easily distinguished from other stoves from their barrel shaped body. These stoves have a round oven at their center where the heating takes place. As compared to Victorian stoves, potbelly wood stoves are usually less elaborate but can be designed with decorative engravings. In the 19th century, these stoves were a popular replacement for the rectangular wood stoves.

Today, potbelly woodstoves are generally used for decorative purposes. Some people even use them to heat and cook food. The larger potbelly wood stoves can also be used as heating appliances in winter. In fact, in olden times, these devices were used as central heating appliance in small homes. Wood or charcoal can be used to fuel these stoves, which makes them economical. A chimney is usually attached to a potbelly wood stove as an outlet for the smoke.

Potbelly wood stoves have made for more advanced and cleaner wood stoves. These emit very little smoke and ash, require less firewood and also reduce the chances of a fire. However, these unique items still have their significance. Whether used for heating or merely as a decorative item, these stoves are worth treasuring.
