Spring Cleaning Tip ... There's Something In The Air

With winter fading and the weather warming, homeowners are once again bracing themselves for the familiar challenges of a good Spring cleaning. Some will spend hours - and others days - trying to rid the home of a winter's worth of dust, dirt and grime. Which end of that spectrum you end up on may depend on whether or not you've installed a high-efficiency whole-house air cleaner.
A whole-house air cleaning system is generally the most efficient and effective way to reduce airborne contaminants in a home, including dust, pollen and bacteria," says Tom Kraeutler, host of the nationally syndicated Money Pit Home Improvement radio show. Cleaning up visible dirt and grime is hard enough, but allergens and other harmful pollutants can also accumulate in homes over the long winter months.
While most furnaces have filters, these filters typically remove only the larger debris. Smaller, more harmful particles pass right through. In fact, only about 15 percent of all air-borne particles are large enough to get trapped by a common furnace panel filter. The rest are re-circulated back into living areas, causing a build up of dust and - especially in the Spring - higher levels of allergens and bacteria.
For homeowners looking to reduce dust and improve indoor air quality, Kraeutler points to Aprilaire's Electronic Air Cleaner, which can trap large dust particles but also filters out virus-sized particles - with an efficiency rate of 80 percent, including 99 percent of spores and pollen and 94 percent of airborne bacteria.
"Consumers today are more demanding when it comes to the quality and comfort of their indoor air," adds Kraeutler.
Electronic air cleaners work by charging pollutants in an electrical field, then collecting and trapping them on a patented-grounded media that only needs to be changed once each year.
