Trane, Carrier, Rudd, York, Lennox, Goodman, Intertherm, Amana - Who's Equipment Is The Best
By Troy Dobson

The one question I can count on anytime the conversation turns to what I have made a living with for the last 20 years is, " Which equipment is the best?"

I have installed every one of the models listed above and some others as well and I can say with out a doubt that there is very little mechanically that sets these pieces of equipment apart. If you look at the guts of what makes these units go, for instance GE makes most of the motors out there and you really cannot wind a motor to many different ways. The fan blades are generally made by the same company out of the same material. The compressors have the same motors with the same copper wire and the valves in the heads of the compressor are all made of the same material. The electrical wiring inside the unit is the same wire everybody else has, its in your house, TV, radio, car.

The circuit boards are the same boards with the same little relays and circuits that you could buy a Radio Shack. The metal that the cabinet is built from is the same metal that everybody else has the opportunity to use. The one difference is that some of the more expensive pieces of equipment out there have thicker metal in their cabinet design.

Also my research does suggest that the more expensive equipment does occasionally come with a better grade of coil. You will also find that the more you pay the more bells and whistles you will get. Hence the main circuit board may be twice as big as the competition because the unit requires more circuits to run the extra stuff like economizers, air cleaners, power exhaust systems and CO sensors that can bring outside air when the inside air gets stale.

I will repeat what I suggested earlier, mechanically there is not much remarkable about any of the equipment you can buy out there. Except the price. You will pay extra for the name on that sticker.
