Protect Your Family From The Silent Killer
By Karen Ann Martin

Many homeowners still are not aware of the law designed to protect MA residents from the dangers of carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, tasteless, colorless gas that can be deadly. Often called the "silent killer" carbon monoxide (CO) is produced by fossil-fuel burning appliances such as furnaces, water heaters, space heaters, fireplaces & wood burning stoves.

CO poisoning is the leading cause of accidental death in the U.S. Each year, Carbon Monoxide kills more than 2,000 people. The new MA law requires that CO alarms be installed in all residences that contain fossil-fuel burning equipment before March 31, 2006. The alarms should be placed within 10 feet of all bedrooms. Install CO alarms on every level of your home except in basements & attics that do not have habitable living spaces. A CO alarm is the only safe way to find out if carbon monoxide is present in your home.

The first symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning are similar to the flu ( but without the fever) They include Headache, Fatigue, shortness of breath, nausea, & dizziness. If you think you have the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning or your CO alarm is sounding, contact your local fire department and leave the building immediately.
