Skip Hire - How to Choose the Most Suitable Skip Size For Your Needs
By Katy Attwood

How do I know which size skip suits my needs?

Whether you are a novice or veteran skip hirer, deciding which size skip suits your requirements is no easy task and yet it is an important decision. Skip hire is an expensive business so it does not make sense to get a skip that is too big. But what if the skip you choose is too small - you will then have to pay double to get rid of all your waste.

Fine, you might say. I'll just enquire about the dimensions when I phone to book my skip. But the problem with this is few people can think in three dimensions. Cubic yardage (how skips are measured) is no easy concept to grasp. And merely saying that a six cubic yard skip is roughly the size of a small car is hardly accurate.

The problem is exacerbated by the problem that certain skips cannot take certain types of waste. Any skip larger than 8 cubic yards cannot be completely filled with heavy wastes such as soil and concrete as the total weight would be too heavy to lift.

Below is a concise guide to the various domestic skips on the market to help you establish which skip to choose. You can also see this information in video format by clicking on Topskips TV on the Skip Size page of Topskips.com.

2 cubic yard mini skip

This skip measures two foot six inches high, four foot long and three feet wide. It is the smallest available skip and is often used for small garden or household jobs. This skip tends not to be available in London, Glasgow, Reading or Edinburgh. It is available everywhere else.

4 cubic yard midi skip

his skip measures three foot two inches high, six foot long and four foot three inches wide. This skip is ideal for jobs like bathroom or kitchen refits. This is the smallest skip available in London, Glasgow, Reading or Edinburgh but is available all over the country.

6 cubic yard small builders skip

8 cubic yard large builders skip

This is perhaps the most popular skip and measures four foot high, twelve foot long and five foot six inches wide. This multi purpose skip is ideal for renovation jobs and is the largest skip available for heavy waste like rubble, sand, soil, clay, cement and concrete.
