An earth wall is made using soil mixed with water and some cement. The soil walls are used in beach huts or cottages in warm areas. This rooms are very comfortable to stay in during the hot weather. The soil walls do not absorb heat. After the soil wall is constructed, it is usually very rough. The wall may be finished using various methods. The wall can be plastered with cement or lime. This allows for other decorative finishes like paint.

The earth wall plaster is mixed normally. The difference from the masonry plaster is the method of application. In the masonry wall finishes, plaster adheres itself to the walls. Where soil walls are used, a system of adhering has to be formed. The rough earth wall has to be fixed with a chicken mesh for reinforcing the plaster. The walls of the cottage are watered both internally and externally. The internal plaster is finished as for a masonry.

The earth wall plaster commences by fixing a chicken mesh wire on the surface. The mesh covers the entire wall surface. This is nailed with barbed wire nails onto the posts. A mixture of cement and sand is first laid onto the wall. This mix is very liquid consistency. It is allowed to dry for one day. It is usually a rough cast plaster. it is used to provide a base for the quarter inch plaster to be done. Thickness marks are also done at the same time.

After the earth wall rough cast is dry, the next day the normal plaster commences. The mesh wire should not be visible. The plaster is done internally and the procedure repeated externally. The internal surface is finished smooth and the external rough. It is important to use bright colors to reflect the heat away from the cottage. This also minimizes the use of mechanical ventilators. Usually a white paint would be advisable for the two surfaces.
