Five Ways to Avoid a Fire in Your House

I can't guarantee that any one of the items listed below will guarantee your safety or prevent any fires from ever happening in your home, but it's a start. Fire safety starts with you and your family. If no one in your family knows anything about fires or fire safety, you could find yourself dealing with some difficult choices in the future.
1. Keep all flammable liquids and materials located safely away from your house. This doesn't mean that you stack flammable liquids next to your wood fence either.
2. Check your house for gas leaks. You might be able to contact your local utility company or a home inspector to check your homes for gas leaks.
3. Try to avoid smoking inside of your house. If you are going to smoke inside your house, it wouldn't be a bad idea to place your cigarette inside of a large ashtray and start making this a habit.
4. Candles are one of the biggest causes for home fires. If you're going to use candles, try to keep them away from flammable objects like curtains and clothing. Make sure that all candles are safely extinguished before you leave any rooms where the candles are burning and make sure that they are extinguished before you go to bed or leave the house.
5. I saved the most important fire safety tip for last. Share this information with your family and friends. Don't play with matches is definitely an old fire safety rule that can be taught to children with very little effort.
I truly believe that a little common sense can go a long way in fire safety. You're obviously not going to have matches or cigarette lighters laying around the house with young children. You're not going to be lighting fireworks off in your living room and you should make sure that your Christmas tree is using approved lightning.
The last tip that I would like to give you, is a home fire extinguisher. There are different kinds of fire extinguishers available today, but it wouldn't be a bad idea to have one located in your garage and one in your kitchen. Everyone in the home should know where they are located.
