How to Kill Your Contractor
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Marcus_Camfferman]Marcus Camfferman

The things you come across as a contractor sometimes make you shake your head in disbelief. I'm a mechanical guy, obviously I own an air conditioning company in Florida. I pretty much know my limitations when it comes to repairing things. Some people don't. Sure Ive seen the homeowner that makes the repair themselves - I kinda admire the initiative but stop it. I like keeping my fingers free from electrical burns.

On a recent call the home owner proudly informed me that he recently had replaced his condenser fan motor himself ( the outside unit of an air conditioner ) but the unit was not cooling. He had installed the wrong motor ( much to large horsepower wise ) the fan blade was going backwards and the rpm of the motor was tremendously more than what was required. Put it this way - I could hear his ac running behind his house from the street. It sounded like a harrier jump jet taking off. He couldn't understand what the problem was.

I once was working on a small refrigerated case in a restaurant. I had the unit shut off at a switch in the case which disconnected all power - No hazard right. Now I'm sitting Indian style on the floor wires like spaghetti every where, tools out obviously working on this case - well I guess not. The manager ( who had called me to make the repair ) walks up behind me, puts his hand on my shoulder reaches over me and turns the unit on at the switch. I almost broke his arm because I grabbed him so hard, just from my reaction.

My friend while working on an air handler in an attic made a crucial mistake. He allowed the home owner to shut off the power, which he witnessed but did not check for voltage at the unit. Of course in Florida in the summer in the attic you tend to be a bit sweaty. You know its only literally 130 degrees. My friend steps over the air handler gets massively shocked, the only thing that saved him was the fact he and the air handler both fell through the ceiling. Sure the breaker was off - but it had been rigged by the home owner, he was picking up voltage off another breaker as well. The list goes on and on - Please don't kill your contractor.
