Solution 1: Empty your closet and purge. With this method, you just take everything out and only put things back in that you have definitely decided to keep. Everything else (which should be anything that you have not worn in the past year) gets donated, trashed or goes in a very small "maybe" pile.
Solution 2: Take your closet in sections. Closet solutions like this one mean that you tackle a specific section of your closet. During that time, you go through everything in that section and get rid of what you do not need.
Solution 3: Devote a specific amount of time each day or each week to cleaning out your closet. If you do this method, scheduling it on your calendar is a good idea. Treat it like you would any other appointment. Make sure that you show up and do what you need to do.
