How to Prevent Water Damage in the Home
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Ryan_Coisson]Ryan Coisson

It's a nightmare scenario: while you are on vacation, that little inconsequential drip in the bathroom sink upstairs becomes a catalyst for disaster when the drain becomes clogged. The ensuing flood causes thousands of dollars in damage and exposes your family to the dangers of mold and mildew growth. Of course, disasters do happen; but many such incidents can be prevented by exercising a little care. Here are some ideas for how to prevent water damage in the home.

-- Shut off your water altogether

If you are going to be gone for at least a week, take the proper precautions against disaster by turning off your water altogether. Separate shut-off valves for interior and exterior water systems will allow you to cut off the water supply to the inside of your house without also turning off your yard sprinklers. If you will be gone during the winter, shutting off the water will prevent the disaster caused by frozen pipe breakage.

-- Drip, drip, drip

If you live in areas that suffer extremes in cold temperatures such as Wisconsin, Minnesota, the Dakotas, Canada, and Alaska, it's perfectly OK to let your faucets drip continuously during the winter. It needn't be a stream: just periodic drops. This will go a long way toward preventing frozen pipes that could wreak havoc by bursting.

-- Clean downspouts and gutters at least twice a year

Multiple water damage incidents are caused by improper water drainage due to clogged gutters along the eaves. Even homes in the desert southwest are susceptible to this problem, so take the time to clean out downspouts and gutters at least twice a year.

They say an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and this old saying definitely holds true when it comes to preventing water damage in the home.
