Protecting Your Home Against the Winter

Keeping warm in the winter is vital and we have to do everything in our power to do so, whether we use central heating, double glazed windows or a combination of heating technologies. However, what else can we do to help insulate our homes? What can we do to minimise our use of these resources, which would result in your home being more environmentally friendly and that is exactly what we all should be doing. Just remember that if you do make any altercations to your home that might affect your home insurance policy you need to get in touch with your UK home insurance provider to notify them.
Preparing for storms
If you live in an area that is known for having quite a stormy winter then here are some tips to ensure your (and your house's ) safety.
Find and secure (or replace if necessary) any loose tiles (roof, etc), pipe work and/or guttering
Keep your garden furniture indoors when you're not using it
Inspect your fencing and if it's not 100% secure you need to ensure that it is BEFORE a storm arrives
Check your garden for any noticeable debris (big branches, etc) that might be scattered across your garden
If thunderstorms are a problem in your area it is most advisable that you invest in a lightning conductor to ensure the survival of your home during big thunderstorms
Inspect all of your windows and windowpanes to ensure they are all in good condition and replace the ones that aren't
A big problem during winter is burst pipes, so what can you do to avoid this common problem?
Insulate ALL of your pipes, cisterns and water tanks
Fix any dripping taps or pipes. Any leak could freeze in low temperatures and ultimately lead to a burst pipe and a large repair bill.
If you are leaving your home unattended for any extended period of time, you should ensure your central heating timer is set to come on at regular intervals and turn off the water supply at the stopcock.
If you do discover a burst pipe then you need to turn off your water supply at the main stopcock and turn ALL systems (heating, boilers, etc) that use water off. You will then need to drain the entire water system, so run the taps while you call the plumber and your house insurance provider (if there was any damage that you are covered for). http://www.pru.co.uk/insurance_protection/home_insurance/
