Prepare For Winter
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Melissa_Hash]Melissa Hash

Getting your home prepared for winter, and spending money to do it, may not seem like a big money saver at first but it can actually save you a great deal of time over the course of the season.

* Purchase heat wrap and wrap any pipes under your home that are above ground or are prone to freezing. A frozen, or busted, pipe will not only cost you a great deal of money to fix, but you will also be without running water in the middle of winter until it is fixed.

* Place a water heater insulator around your water heater. Keeping it insulated means less work the water heater has to do to heat the water which will save you money on your electric bill.

* Check all of the doors and windows for air leaks and stop the leaks you want to keep your heat in and not lose it to the outside.

* Add insulation under your home or in your attic to save on your heating costs.

* Buy thermal curtains for all of your windows. An uncovered window can suck out a great deal of your heat and thermal window coverings add an extra degree of protection.

* Check all of our fire alarms and purchase a fire extinguisher if you do not already have one.

* Prepare for an electric outage by creating a stockpile of ready to eat foods and water. Make sure you have at least three days worth for you, your family, and your pets.

* Make sure all of your flashlights have fresh batteries and invest in a few of the hand crank lanterns.

* Keep warm blankets clean and available in case your heat goes out.

Preparing for winter doesn't take much effort and any costs will be worth it.
