Preparing Your Home For Winter
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Nancy_Kelsey_Smith]Nancy Kelsey Smith

We have said good-by to that warm and wonderful summer weather and now there is a big change on the horizon. Old man winter is knocking at the door and he will not be turned away so it is time to prepare for his imminent arrival. How ready is your home?

Now, before the snow flies, is the time to do the winterizing that will make a big difference in conserving energy, keeping your home comfortable and warm and helping to reduce your fuel bills. There are a few preliminary steps that will greatly add to the effectiveness of of heating your home this winter.

First and foremost, have your furnace checked by someone who is qualified to assess the safety and efficiency of your unit. This could not only save you a good deal of money but might also avert a dangerous situation.

If you are willing to take on the expense (usually fairly reasonable) of adding extra insulation to your home it will very likely be a money saver in the long run. This year may be right time to make this change because a lot of the large utility companies are offering rebates to customers who add extra insulation. Adding weather stripping to drafty doors provides extra protection against the cold winter blasts that will be looking for a way into your home. Another small step that will go a long way in helping to reduce heating bills while maintaining interior warmth is putting a thin strip of insulation along your window openings and your garage door. The cost is minimal and the return will be well wroth the expense. Another tip is to wrap your water heater and surrounding pipes with insulation or some other type of protective covering.

You will enjoy this winter season a lot more if you take the necessary steps now to keep the cold weather outside where it belongs.
