There are some things that people can get away with when they begin designing or refurbishing their own homes, however there are other things that care homes cannot get away with and would need to adhere to when conducting a change of furniture. Choosing just one suitable care home furniture is tricky as it needs to follow various health and safety rules and regulations. The whole point in taking your time when picking out furniture for care homes is so that the residents feel comfortable, safe and well taken care of. Care homes are more than just a home for the elderly and act as their place of home therefore it is important to create that homely feeling.

The important thing to remember that any care home furniture will need to be properly maintained and last for a long time. Some residents may prefer to be seated in a certain 'favourite' chair, therefore you will need to make sure that there is enough furnishing to cover for everybody. The next thing to do is to position them in places where they will not become easily damaged, such as away from direct sunlight and radiator heating. They will also need to be kept from moisture build up and avoid constant impact from equipment.

Most care homes have wooden furniture, which can over time become damaged if it is not kept well. Wood can draw in moisture, which could eventually cause its shape to warp. Hardwoods do last longer and are not easily damaged as other woods, however, if wooden chairs are used in a home then it is advisable to have the seats cushioned and have the back rests padded for added comfort. These need to kept in carefully planned areas that will not cause it to be a risk.

Another factor when picking out furniture is the dust factor, cleanliness and hygiene. Fabric furniture can gather a lot of dust, which can aggravate people's allergies and cause skin irritation (depending on how sensitive the resident is). This is something that staff would need to keep an eye on, being sure to polish, upholster or wash the furnishing where needed. Sofas and armchairs are the most used equipment, making it more important to pay close attention to its condition. Simple methods of cleaning can be to dust the surface of the chair using a soft cloth, or using mild soapy water rather than other chemical based products.

Other furniture that are good for making a care home seem more welcoming is to use cushions, wide wooden tables and foot rests. Carpeting is also good for people who prefer to spend their time in the lounge. Each resident should also be equipped with a side lamp, side table, desk and armchair in their bedrooms, as well as a comfortable bed.
