The Pros and Cons of Vinyl Fencing
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Gene_Rodriguez]Gene Rodriguez

Vinyl fencing has become a common sight in neighborhoods across the country. If you're picking a fence material for your yard, odd are vinyl will appear somewhere on your list. As with all major purchases, doing your homework will save you time, money and aggravation.

The Benefits of Vinyl Fencing

If a low maintenance fence is high on your list, then vinyl stands head-and-shoulders above other fences. Vinyl fencing doesn't need to be painted or stained; the color is mixed into the fence material.

When is comes to appearance, vinyl fences look very similar to wood. The newest vinyl fences even feature wood grain molded into the surface.

Vinyl fencing won't produce splinters. This makes vinyl a great alternative if you have pets or small children.

Vinyl fences are easy to clean. A bristle brush, a bucket of soapy water and a garden hose will take care of most dirt and grime.

Vinyl is immune to pests and rot. Unlike wood, vinyl isn't attractive to termites, fungus or dry rot.

On The Other Hand

Vinyl fencing has a high initial cost. The price of a vinyl fence can run 70% to 100% higher than a similar wood fence. Sticker shock, however, doesn't tell the whole story. The increased cost may be offset by the recurring costs of painting or staining a wood fence.

Vinyl is a plastic. Like other things made of plastic, vinyl fences are vulnerable to heat and cold extremes. Vinyl fences become brittle in cold temperatures, making them prone to damage. Short heating and cooling cycles will make vinyl parts expand and contract, leading to shifting and loosening of fence components.

When it comes to color and design, vinyl fencing has made some advances in recent years. Still, nothing compares to the wide variety of options offered by wood fencing.

Cheaper vinyl fencing is prone to fading over time. If possible, ask your installer to provide examples of older installations to see how their fence material holds up over time.

Unlike wooden privacy fences, it is difficult to replace a single damaged board in a vinyl fence. Often, an entire section will have to be replaced, leading to a costly repair.
