A septic tank is a high-capacity, leak-proof tank where the preliminary treatment of various household waste takes place. One of the most important functions of the tank is to receive waste water from the house and separate solids from the water. It will then store the accumulated solid and it will reduce the solids while transporting the cleared waste water to the drain field. Heavy solids will settle at the bottom and it will form a muddy layer. Septic tanks are usually found in rural areas that do not have access to a municipal sewer system.
You are probably wondering how maintenance is practiced when it comes to a septic system. You really can't do much and it is limited to the stuff you put in it. Common sense will tell you not to flush things like sanitary napkin and cotton buds to your toilet. Septic systems are designed to handle whatever comes out of the human body. Flushable toilet paper, laundry water and dishwater are still OK. Again, I'll stress it out, do not flush regular toilet paper because this will clog your septic system in the long run, it does not have the ability to eliminate solids. A garbage disposal will not really help because it will chop up food items but they will still be solid when they reach the tank. These solids will not break down well and like I said, they have the tendency to settle at the tank's bottom. If you keep on doing this, you will deal with the word "pumping" a lot. This is the periodic removal of accumulated solids in the tank. Normally, you would need to pump your tank every 3 to 5 years but this can be more frequent if you are not careful.
You also have to be careful in dumping harmful chemicals down the drain. You can opt for less toxic household cleaners and you should use them whenever possible. It's also best if you have your septic tank checked every 3 or 5 years just to make sure that everything is running smoothly. You'd rather prevent than repair.
