Steel - The Best Betta Blocker in Town

Betta fish are resilient pets, able to survive for long periods in very little water with a minimal amount of food. But when Greg Brugman's two bettas managed to survive Hurricane Ike, which ravaged Bridge City, TX in 2008, it wasn't their intrinsic hardiness that kept them alive-it was steel.

The Brugman family placed the fish inside a steel storage shed/garage along with a truck and other odds and ends from their house before seeking shelter from Hurricane Ike in a hotel 4 ½ hours away-a move they dubbed a 'Hurrication' to ease the anxiety for their small children.

In its wake, Ike -- which smashed into the coast as a Category 2 hurricane -- left four people dead, millions without power, and destroyed homes and businesses along the Gulf Coast with powerful winds, rain, and floodwaters. Bridge City and large areas of nearby Orange, (80 miles from the center of landfall), were inundated by the storm surge. Bridge City mayor Kirk Roccaforte estimated that only about 14 (later updated to around two dozen) homes in the city were unaffected by the surge

With this news in mind, Brugman was filled with trepidation as he traveled home to survey the damage. "My current elevation is approximately 8 feet above sea level, and our home revealed 5" of standing water," said Brugman. "I along with a close friend and my brother in law ripped out the entire contents of my home from the bottom to 8'-the only thing left was sheet rock on the ceilings, plumbing in the walls, and soaked studs."

His steel shed/garage, however, was a different story. "The building was a life saver," says Brugman. "Thankfully it is coated with Galvalume or it would be a complete rust bucket. Today it looks like it did when I purchased it!"

According to Michelle Wickum, the marketing director for SteelMaster Buildings which sold Brugman his shed/garage, the building did exactly what it is built to do. "Steel does not rot, warp, shrink, or split, and it is non-combustible," says Wickum. "SteelMaster buildings are easier to handle, stronger, and less expensive than any other common garage building materials, and their inherent strength resists fire, earthquake, and hurricane damage. Steel components weigh up to 60 percent less than wood members, and all steel products are repeatedly recyclable. Furthermore, you don't have to treat it, paint it, or maintain it. With a SteelMaster garage, you just enjoy it. The Galvalume Plus coating provides years of maintenance-free use, and the rugged resilient steel will take the bumps and bangs common to a working garage."

As for the fish, Brugman found them exactly as he left them-alive. "If only those fish could talk!" says Brugman.

Brenda, a freelance writer and editor living in Hampton Roads, VA talks about the truth value of the companies guarantees, also showing how steelmaster's steel buildings are beneficial ecologically and economically. Steel master has kept the value behind its name by being the master of steel buildings by keeping its quality. For more information on steel buildings, visit http://www.steelmasterusa.com
