Selecting the Right Bed Sheets
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Doug_Crawford]Doug Crawford

There are many factors that contribute to a good night's sleep. The room should be dark and quiet, the mattress should be firm but comfortable. The most important factor, though, might be the sheets and blankets that are on the bed. If the bedding isn't comfortable, there's very little chance that you're going to get a good sleep.

When choosing bedding, remember to consider the following things:

  • Thread count. Most people have heard of thread count, but many don't fully understand what it means. Thread count per inch (TPI) is a measure of the number of yards woven into one square in of the fabric. It's also a way of measuring how soft and durable a set of sheets is. The higher the thread count (look for a TPI greater than 250), the better the sheets. That said, even the highest thread count can't save sheets that are made from poor-quality materials. This brings us to our next point...

  • Material. As we just mentioned, the quality of a set of sheets is determined not only by the thread count, but also by the yard (material) that they are made out of. Most people look for fine cotton. The best cotton comes from Egypt. Others prefer sheets that are made from flannel or a combination of flannel and cotton. If you're looking for high end sheets, consider a set that's made from satin or silk.

  • Design. When shopping for linens, be sure to keep in mind the overall look and feel of the bedroom. You'll want to purchase sheets that are a color or pattern that fits in with the rest of the decor in the room. Alternately, you can buy the linens first and then match the rest of the room to them. It's generally a smart plan to choose bedding that matches the color of the paint on the walls, although it's safe to select bedding that is a deeper hue.

  • Mattress size. This should go without saying, but we'll say it anyhow. Be sure to get the right size of sheets for your mattress. Remember that custom mattresses (like those with pillowtops) are bigger than conventional mattresses, so they may require larger sheets. It's a good idea to measure beforehand, so that don't get home and discover that your sheets are too small to be tucked in.
