Sound Proofing refers to the reducing or minimizing of sound pressure with respect to the specified sound source and receptor. There are various ways to apply sound proofing and thereby reducing sound. Sound proofing by using noise barriers is one such way, and will absorb or block sound waves with damping structures such as sound baffles. Another way to sound proof is by simply increasing the distance between the source of the noise and the receiver. Sound proofing is effective in two different ways, noise absorption and noise reduction. Noise reduction blocks the path of the sound, while noise absorption works by transforming the sound wave.
Sound proofing is very often used for residential purposes, and this generally refers to the windows. Double glazing is quite effective for soundproofing, as are the use of heavy curtains.
There are several different techniques used in the application of soundproofing and some of these can include:
Distance
Damping
Room within a room
Noise cancellation
Residential soundproofing
Noise-barriers as exterior soundproofing
Distance is often used to reduce sound and is very effective for applications such as; reducing noise from industrial processes to residential areas. The application is straightforward in that the residential area is built at a comfortable distance from the industrial site or vice-versa. This works effectively because the energy density of sound waves diminishes as they spread out, and increasing the distance between sound and receiver results in lesser intensity of the sound.
Damping can be achieved in several different ways. One such way is to add a layer of soft and heavy material between sound and receiver, and this material can be applied on or into a wall or ceiling to make a very effective sound barrier.
Residential soundproofing refers to the elimination or decreasing of exterior noise. The soundproofing of windows is very effective as they are the main route by which external sound waves penetrate a buildings exterior. The use of heavy curtains i.e.; curtains made with heavy thick material, is a very simple way to help damp down sound coming through a window.
Double glazing is very effective for damping sound, as two layers of glass which in turn are sealed to the frame are more efficient than a single pane of glass. This may be further improved by installing another pane of glass or window inside the windows opening next to the double glazed unit, and this is also known as secondary glazing and not to be confused with double glazing. This secondary pane of glass or window will usually open by a sliding mechanism.
