Winter Fun Begins With Fire Pits
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Mary_Buckingham]Mary Buckingham

Fire pits are a popular item this year. In fact, one of the hottest selling items at box stores are fire pits.

A fire pit differs from a fireplace or fire ring. It is a self-contained device that contains a fire, usually an open fire. They are made from steel or iron and often are quite decorative. Fire pits, in fact, can be purchased in a wide range of styles, from contemporary to rustic.

Many people use their fire pits extensively during the spring and summer months. Winter, however, with its gloomy skies and chilly days, is a great time to use fire pits. Instead of being home bound for months on end, get outside and enjoy some company around your pit. Add some popcorn and drinks, and you have a nice party going. A fire pit enables you to enjoy your outdoor space year-round.

When buying a fire pit, make sure that your city allows you to have an open fire. Since they are self-contained fires, most counties don't put up a fuss about them but it never hurts to check first. To be safe, keep a fire extinguisher handy as a precaution.

Because winter weather can be especially unpredictable, you may want to keep your pit covered when not in use. This will help prevent freezing rain and other elements from damaging or making the unit difficult to operate on short notice. You don't want to plan a party and find out you need to thaw the fire pit before turning it on. If space is available, it is a good idea to keep it in a garage or covered area during harsh weather.

Although fire pits provide a good deal of warmth to those who sit around it, plan on bundling up anyway during cold weather. A warm coat, hat and gloves are always a good idea. If you get too warm, you can always remove your coat but staying warm should be a priority for you and your guests.

When placing your pit, be sure to locate it away from anything flammable. Keep it away from tree branches or bushes, and away from wood picnic tables and chairs.

A fire is always an attraction to children. If you have young children in your home or plan to have them as guests, use your fire pit wisely. Always have an adult present when the fire pit is being used. Advise children that a fire pit is not a toy and that they need to keep a safe distance from it, preferably at least four or five feet away. You want to be sure that if a child trips and falls, he or she will not fall into the fire pit. Some fire pits have safety guards around them but many do not. It would be wise to consider safety issues when using your fire pit, whether you use it during the active summer months or the slow months of winter. Fire pits are a great way to enjoy the outdoors. Light one up and enjoy!
