Protecting Your Home From Weather Damage
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Joseph_Devine]Joseph Devine

Many homeowners do their best to make sure that their home stays in good condition and is presentable at all times. They often take great pains to quickly repair damage caused by family members and guests, and work hard to keep everything in good working order. It is nearly impossible to prevent weather damage from occurring, and through the course of owning a home, you may be forced to take preventative measures to minimize the effects of weather on your home.

Water can be one of the most damaging forces to affect your home. Heavy rains and flooding often cause many problems that must be addressed by homeowners. Water intrusion on the roof of a home can cause serious damage to the roofing, insulation, attics, ceilings, and drywall of a home. It is often hard to identify water intrusion on the roof of a home, and damage may be done far before the homeowner has time to address it.

To combat water intrusion on the roof, it is important to regularly inspect shingles, roofing materials, and vents on top of the home. Any weak points or spots where water may seep in should be repaired, caulked, and covered to prevent intrusion. Insulation and drywall should be inspected for wetness and if any spots are found, it should be replaced immediately before hazardous mold can form.

Water leaking at doorways and window sills can be quickly addressed. Mop up any water that gathers on flooring, dry out or replace wet carpets and rugs, and make sure to seal the points of entry with caulk or weather-stripping. Outside, excess water should be drained away from the foundation and dirt should be used to fill in any holes where rainwater can gather.

Wind and sun can also cause damage to your home, so make sure to properly address the exterior to prevent weather damage. Roof tiles should be secured to the home and should be inspected for flaws or wear and tear. Shutters and exterior decorations should be properly secured to the home at all times. Sun-damaged siding can often be re-painted to give a more presentable outlook. Severely weathered boards or siding should be removed before further damage is caused.
