How to Fix Flood Damage
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Natalie_Rich]Natalie Rich

Flood damage can occur during heavy thunderstorms, melting snow, a small leak, a broken levy, a tsunami or some other natural disaster. Those who live on the coastlines have to be especially careful and safe-guard their homes as much as possible from flood damage. Floods can envelope entire neighborhoods or cities at a moments notice, leaving behind immense destruction and serious flood damage to homes. If flood damage is not quickly and properly cleaned up by a flood company, mold can begin to grow at a rapid pace. If the mold is too bad, it can make the entire home uninhabitable.

Step 1
The first step you need to take is to call a reputable flood company that is trained to deal with water damage and mold. You do not want to attempt cleaning mold yourself- the risk is far too great. After water damage, there are mold spores that float in the air and quickly attach themselves to wet surfaces. This is where mold begins to grow and multiply at alarming rates. Inhaling mold can cause severe sickness and respiratory problems.

Step 2
Most water damage is found in carpets. Professionals can remove your carpets to inspect the water damage. If the water damage is too severe, you may have to replace the entire carpet. If the carpet is salvageable, they will dry the carpets and the floor beneath it using heat, dehumidifiers, and high ozone shock treatments. Drying the carpets and floors beneath it can take anywhere from a day to several days, depending on the severity of water damage.

Step 3
After the floors have been thoroughly dried, it is a good idea to clean them. If you have plywood flooring, coating it with an oil-based paint can help seal out any remaining bacteria. If the flooring is concrete, it can be scrubbed with bleach and then later coated with an oil-based paint.

Mold is a very serious health concern, and if not properly cleaned and removed by an experienced flood company, it could cause you and your family serious health problems, such as: asthma, dizziness, allergies, respiratory problems, coughing and nose bleeds. After flood damage has occurred, contact a flood company within 48 hours to prevent mold from growing completely out of control. Even if you can't save your carpets, you can save your health.
