Why is it So Important to Know Exactly What You Will Use Your Metal Building For?

Are you in the market for a new metal building kit? You may be surprised at some of the questions that dealers and manufacturers ask.

Why for example is it important for the manufacturer to know what you will be doing in your building?

There are a number of reasons that answers to questions like this are required.

First off there are building code issues. Some building codes require different parameters to be placed on the engineering of certain buildings. Structural design is different for an agricultural building than for an arena even though the building structure may be the same size and shape. A dry storage facility will have different engineering criteria than a volatile storage facility structure of the same size and shape.

Location of the structure can have an impact as well. A structure out in the open can have different design criteria than the same building with the same use that is placed in a forest or city.

Engineered metal buildings are "economized". This means that the structural members are designed to handle the required loading and no more. That is how they keep the cost down on these structures.

Every extra load that is placed on the building must to be accounted for. Roof-top equipment has to be identified so that the weight on the structure can be designed into the building.

A chain hoist, crane or other equipment that will rely on the structure for support must also be identified for the engineers. These loads are critical in the over-all performance of the building. If they are added without being designed into the loading on the building failure can occur.

The number of openings in the building can also affect the structural design - not only by requiring framing members to support the openings but also in the up-lift design of the structure.

Metal buildings are basically big balloons. The metal roof and wall panels need to be fastened sufficiently so when all doors are opened the wind load will not blow the metal panels off your building.

Uplift design is also required for your foundations. The piers and footings may have to be enlarged in order to provide enough ballast to combat the wind uplift on the building.

These are some of the reasons for engineers needing answers to just this one question. To be sure that you are getting the proper building for your needs make sure that you have thought your intended use well. Answer all questions in as much detail as possible to ensure that the engineers have all of the information they need to give you the best building and price possible.

If your dealer, builder or manufacturers rep does not ask these questions - Beware!
