It's Time to Collect Raindrops
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Gardner_Wilkinson]Gardner Wilkinson

Can we deny the need of preserving our most precious natural resource, water? Rainwater is one of the major sources of uncontaminated water on Earth. However, human beings are yet to fathom the utmost need for rainwater collection. We could say that the need has been realized, but the urgency of the need has not yet sunk in, in the minds of many. Deforestation has awfully affected the monsoons. Rainwater harvesting is a viable option to meet the water crisis. Rainwater harvesting is the process of accumulating and storing rainwater. It uses the principle of collecting and using precipitation from a catchment surface.

Accumulation of rainwater happens naturally in open rural areas. But in congested metropolitan cities, we need to create methods to collect rainwater. There are two different types of rainwater harvesting systems, the runoff rainwater harvesting and the rooftop rainwater harvesting. The purpose for harvesting and other physical and human considerations determine the type of system to be used.

Why should we opt for rain water harvesting?

* Surface water is inadequate to meet the escalating urban demand for water.

* Rapid and drastic urbanization has decreased infiltration of rain water into the sub-soil and recharging of ground water has also diminished subsequently.

* These days, groundwater is in short supply and mostly contaminated.

* Rain water harvesting increases soil moisture levels for urban greenery, increases the level of the water table through artificial recharge, and mitigates urban flooding.

* In urban areas of the developed world, at a household level, harvested rainwater can be used for flushing toilets and washing laundry. It can also be used for showering or bathing. It may require treatment prior to use for drinking.

Benefits of rain water harvesting:

* If the ground water happens to be brackish, harvesting will reduce the salinity. Rainwater harvesting will progressively leach out salts resulting in clean water.

* This technique succors to reduce topsoil loss and thereby improve plant growth.

* Rainwater harvesting replenishes the groundwater level and enables dug wells and bore wells to yield water in a sustained manner.

* Flooding of low lying areas can be avoided since rainwater that is not harvested is mainly responsible for flooding.

* Harvesting rainwater can be put to use in effectively managing irrigation and drinking water facilities.

The technique of rainwater harvesting has been revived in urban areas in order to preserve every drop of water. Rainwater collection will be a boon in times of disaster and havoc. If man is sensitive and welcoming to nature, no doubt, nature would gladly bestow all her gifts upon mankind.
