Where Has Common Sense Gone?
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Jason_Brewer]Jason Brewer

Have you heard enough about "these tough economic times?" I know I have. I think that we are all aware that things aren't so great right now. One thing we can be sure of, in times like these, we need to use "common sense." Unfortunately, if there is one thing I've learned over the last several years it is that common sense is not always so...well...common.

Here's an example. We are all aware that in almost every part of the country, home prices have been declining. Place blame wherever you want, but this is part of the economic cycle that was inevitable. Hopefully for everyone, it won't last long and home values will begin to head north again. However, there are far too many people that are putting off home maintenance projects because they are afraid to spend the money. Common sense should tell you that if your home is already losing value, the last thing you want to do is let it fall into disrepair and lose even more value. Yeah, you might want to hold off on that hot tub, or new furniture for a while, but please, fix the leaky roof!

I work with a company that specializes in log home restoration. We use corn cob blasting to remove failing finish from log homes. Most of the time, the homes we blast just needed another coat of finish 2 or 3 years ago. Instead, the owners decided to wait another year, then another, then another. Now, instead of just another coat, they have to have it blasted down to bare wood and then refinished. I'm not complaining, this is what keeps us in business. However, it pays to put money into maintenance now, or you'll likely have to spend a great deal more later.

So, while it is a good idea to be a little more cautious on how you are spending your hard earned money, don't skimp on the maintenance! Use some common sense and take care of what you have. Chances are, the cycle will continue and sooner or later, our home values will go up again.
