Water Damage Prevention in Homes
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Gary_Kent_Hamilton]Gary Kent Hamilton

You may not think water damage can happen to your home but it can. Take a moment and think beyond flood damage from natural disasters. Your appliances and plumbing are more likely to cause water damage in your home. Sewage back up, sump pump backups, broken pipes and leaky pipes are common culprits when thinking about causes of flooded basements.

The best way to avoid structural and mold problems is to think about prevention. There are proactive things that you as a homeowner can do that can help you avoid the costs of mold removal, sewage clean up and water damage repair.

Although it is a chore you must perform maintenance on your gutters and downspouts on a regular basis. Keeping them clear of debris may sound trite, but there is a reason all homes have them. Gutters and downspouts are there to keep water away from the foundation of your home or building.

You may want to consider investing in a battery operated sump pump as a line of defense against water damage. These sump pumps do not rely on electricity to save your home from water damage and turn on automatically because by the time you realize you have water in the house it may be too late.

An inexpensive piece of rubber tubing in your home that can cause a tremendous amount of water damage is a faulty washing machine hose. You may be surprised to know that the top loading washing machine in your house uses on average forty one gallons of water per load. Imagine the clean up that would be necessary if your washing machine hose were to break or become disconnected.

Damage from flooding often occurs before you or your family notices there is a problem. Water pipes frequently are in places where you cannot readily see them, such as under your sink or in the basement. A simple solution is to purchase water alarms. Strategically placed water alarms will alert you to water problems so you don't end up with a flooded home. These inexpensive devices sense moisture and alert you to potentially problematic situations. Water alarms can be placed on the floor or securely mounted to any wall or cabinet.
