Tradespeople Are Business People in the Modern World
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Garry_P_Pierrepont]Garry P Pierrepont

In a recession-hit country, many people may be shying away from spending money as they strive to fend off the worst effects of the downturn. Nevertheless, with the option of moving house firmly denied to them, either by simple economics, or by the lack of mortgage availability from the banks, many people are looking at their own properties and wondering how they can best improve them, or simply keep them well maintained against the usual wear and tear and the traditional British weather.

For the building maintenance provider, it is a time when there may be opportunities out there, but earning and winning prospects and turning them into real business is harder than ever.

It goes without saying that customers want value for money, and they will want a job done that will last for a long time and not mean further maintenance or repeat calls to the builder to return and fix ongoing problems.

Building maintenance handymen need to be able to demonstrate their skills and reputation with a portfolio and testimonials from satisfied customers. A company using sub-contractors needs to be able to verify the credentials of their workers and convince customers of the same.

In the modern world it would be an unwise and unwary customer who gave business to opportunist traders knocking on their door. This is surely not the way business should be done, and many traders of this kind have been exposed in the press or on television as so-called 'rogue traders'.

Today's handyman cannot just be skilled in their particular trade any longer. At the same time as providing skilled workers they have to be business people as well. It is the era for customer service and customer relationships, not the time for fly-by-night operations.

Customers will certainly be looking for a bargain or a deal in these days of recession, but they will also be looking for evidence of good work and, beyond that, good customer service too. A business with a good service record and a strong portfolio should make itself stand out.

The skills of today's business tradespeople must include the ability to win and retain customers, earning their respect as well as their money for a job well done. By doing the job well, and building a relationship with their customers, a handyman can hope to earn testimonials and repeat business, fending off competition in an economic climate that means that only the most successful business people will prosper.
