3 Biggest Disadvantages of Reverse Osmosis
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Frank_Carson]Frank Carson

Be aware of the disadvantages of reverse osmosis if you are thinking of purchasing a water filtration system. One of the most commonly asked questions is," does reverse osmosis make water safe to drink?". Unknown to most people, there are some major drawbacks to using a reverse osmosis filtration system, and this can ultimately effect the quality of water it produces. Here are the 3 biggest disadvantages of this type of water purification.

First we need to understand what the whole process is, then we can move onto the disadvantages of this system. In simple terms, osmotic pressure is used in order to force water through a fine filter there by pulling contaminants and salt out of the water by trapping those particles in the filter.

The first major problem with reverse osmosis is that it removes toxins based on molecular size. The problem is that most chemicals and toxins are molecularly smaller than water. This means that most synthetic chemicals will not be removed from the water supply and still leaves your supply contaminated.

The second is that this system does a wonderful job of removing source minerals, contaminants, and the water itself. Now it's good that it gets rid of contaminants with a larger molecular make up than water, however, you still want the minerals to remain. Also, because of it's basic design, it also wastes a very large portion of water. So it gets rid of contaminants, as long as the molecular make up is larger than water, but also wastes a large portion of water putting your bill up for water you don't use, and gets rid of essential minerals that you want to remain in your water supply.

The third disadvantage is the amount of time it takes. These types of systems are agonizingly slow in their ability to purify water supplies. These systems are designed to use osmotic pressure through the filter and membrane used to cleanse the water. Then, pressure is applied to stop and reverse the process, This takes a lot of pressure, and time, and slows down the purification process significantly.

Compared to most systems, there are major disadvantages of reverse osmosis, and these are just a few. There are other systems on the market that do a much more efficient job of purifying your water supply without depriving you of a lot of the naturally occurring benefits of water.
