Five Tips to Conserve Water at Home

Whether you are trying to teach your children good habits or you are trying to live a less ecologically wasteful lifestyle, you'll find that conserving water should be at the top of your list of goals. Water is a resource that many of us take for granted. Conserving water can save you money on your water bill, but you will also find that it can save on pollution as well. When your municipal water system is overloaded, there is a much better chance that you will see water that is more polluted. Water is wasted when we are not paying attention to how we are using. Virtually every way that you use water can be wasteful unless you keep an eye on it!

When you want to conserve water in your home, here are five useful tips to keep in mind.

1. Go to the car wash
It sounds counter intuitive, but the truth of the matter is that you will waste a lot more water washing your car at home. The car wash needs to obey regulations on gray water recycling and good disposal of cleaning chemicals in their water. When you wash your car at home, the water does not get recycled, and cleaning chemicals will find their way into the sewers.

2. Water saving shower heads
Unless you take a five minute shower, the amount of water that you use when you shower is roughly similar to the amount of water that is used when you take a bath. To make sure that your water is really saving you water, consider putting in a water saving shower head. A shower head that saves you water through reducing the water that flows through it while keeping the velocity of the water high.

3. Repair leaks
Are there any leaks in your home? If there are, make sure that you replace them as soon as possible. One way to figure out if you have leaks is to check your water meter before and after a period where there is no water being used. This should tell you if there is a leak in the home. Remember that a leak may only represent the loss of a small amount of water, but it is consistent.

4. Reuse water
One of the best ways to get use out of your water is to use it twice. When you bathe or shower or when you rinse something out, you'll find that using the water to do something else, like watering the vegetables, can go a long way towards helping you reduce the amount of water you use.

5. Doing ecologically friendly laundry.
When you are looking at conserving water in your home, you'll find that the laundry is something that needs some attention. If you can afford it, look for a washer that is specifically meant to conserve water, and don't do laundry unless you have a full load. Similarly, if you have a clothesline, you can save power as well by hanging your clothes up.

Take some time to consider how to conserve water in your home. Not only can it save you money, you will also find that it can also help you do your part in terms of conservation!
