Cleaners and Degreasers
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Vince_P_Platania._Jr.]Vince P Platania. Jr.

Cleaning and degreasing isn't anyone's favorite task and we want to do it as as thoroughly as necessary, but also as quickly. There are multiple things you can use a degreaser for, including your grill, walls, stoves and in some cases even clothing and fabrics will require the use of one over the course of their useful lifetime.

When is a degreaser the right choice and are there cleaners and degreasers made that won't hurt the environment but will still get the job done so that whatever it is we're trying to clean ends up clean?

When you need a degreaser is going to be fairly apparent. When the item you're trying to use, particularly your grill or other cooking utensil, isn't able to be cleaned in another fashion and the grease buildup is apparent to you, then its time to find something that will remove it, but you also want to remove it gently. Toxic degreasers aren't the best choice for use near things that also come into contact with food.

There are degreasers that work with the environment rather than against it and they will still do an adequate job. In the old days, the alkaline type detergents were built with phosphates, and had some solvents included in them that were a great degreaser but were also toxic to humans, polluted the ground and the EPA decided they had to go.

Thankfully some new stuff has cropped up that replaces those, and offers us a cleaner and degreaser that is quite aggressive against grease, but is still non malignant to our environment?

What should you look for if you're trying to find a more "green" type degreaser?
Many of the more safe degreaser products will use citric acid of one variety or another. Lemon and orange are the most common, and in many cases these will be benign to our environment.

You will definitely want to find one that is phosphate free, and which states on its label that it is biodegradable, and last but certainly not least, the degreaser that you buy should, of course, clean and degrease.

If at all possible try to find a degreaser that states that it is not harmful to the environment and which will also do minimal damage to clothing or can be used on clothing. In many cases, if a degreaser can be used in the laundry, it is not harsh enough to do damage to the other items for which it may be useful.
