Taking Care of Your Awnings
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Jeff_Olivier]Jeff Olivier

Many homeowners enjoy the presence of awnings on the exterior of the house. These wonderful devices can help to protect the windows and doors from direct sunlight, which can be helpful on hot days. They also help to provide a measure of protection when rain or snow is present as well. While functional, it is possible to keep the coverings looking great as well, by following a few simple tips.

Maintenance of the awnings around your home is vital if you want to get the most from them. Many types are made of metal, which provides a high level of durability. Of course, the elements can corrode the metal over time, unless the surface is treated properly. This will mean using a paint that is formulated to resist the wear and tear that can come about by exposure to sunlight, rain, snow, wind and other environment issues.  Many people choose to reinforce the paint job with a coat of clear sealant as well. The sealant helps to minimize the chance of small scratches in the paint, which can lead to oxidation of the metal and the formation of corrosive conditions, such as rust.

Along with a protective paint job and sealer, another important point is to clean the window coverings from time to time.  Grime can build up on an awning, which will add more stress to the finished surface. Wash the awnings thoroughly several times a year, using a reliable but gentle cleanser. Taking the time to remove pollen, dirt and other pollutants from the surface will make it easier to keep the devices looking great and last for a long time. Just as with many aspects of the home, an awning can be a costly feature. Spending some time in taking care of the devices around the home will mean that replacement will occur less often, and you will be able to get your money's worth from each awing installed around the home.
