10 Myths of Indoor Air

1. Indoor air is cleaner than outdoor air.

Not True. Indoor air is usually 30 to 50% more polluted than outdoor air.

2. The air in your home should smell like something good when you come in from outside.

Not True. When you walk into a home the air should smell like absolutely nothing no odors at all of any kind.

3. Fresh paint on the walls can make our house smell clean and fresh.

Not True Paint fumes are bad for us to breathe they are considered a VOC (Volatile Organic Compound)

4. High Humidity (Moisture content) is good for the dry air in our homes.

Not True Relative humidity over 40% starts to breed mold, fungi and other irritants that are bad for us. Keep all sources of moisture cleaned up and exhausted outdoors

5. Tobacco smoke indoors in a wide open area will not harm us.

Not True The effects on our eyes, nose, and throat especially on our children are several times higher than if we used tobacco products outdoors.

6. New built homes are not at risk for indoor air pollution

Not True Just the opposite they are at much greater risks due to the formaldehydes from pressed wood in new cabinets, furniture, and new carpeting and paint and are built with a much tighter construction.

7. Your central heating system, chimneys and flues only need to be inspected every several years.

Not True Have them inspected every year even the smallest cracks in our furnace or blockages in our flues cans cause very ill symptoms without death from carbon monoxide leakage and build up.

8. Unvented supplemental heaters are very safe and not harmful in anyway.

Not True. Any gas burning appliance (even your stove) gives off by products one being carbon monoxide use common sense when using these and leave windows cracked and adjacent doors open.

9. A furnace filter is all that is needed to keep the air in our home clean.

Not True Many things in the air are heavier than air and we only clean the air returned through the filter therefore they are many other options than just using our furnace filter.

10. Radon Gas does not exist in very many homes.

Not True Radon exists in a great many homes and because it is odorless, tasteless, colorless and radioactive we should all test for it. There are many inexpensive devices on the market to do so
