There are grants available to help individuals and families deal with low-income issues and grants available for home improvement projects. For years now, families and individuals needing help keeping their gas, water and electric service on have found them with special low-income and home improvement grants. Depending on where you live and how much money you make, you may be eligible for support from these grants. Each program has different eligibility guidelines, so you may be eligible for one or more programs.

Dollar Energy Fund Hardship Program

This grant is paid directly to your utility account and is available for customers who may not be eligible for Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP.) The income guidelines are set at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Income Guidelines. Dollar Energy Fund has provided more than $50,000,000 in utility assistance to over 200,000 homes since 1983. They have a network of 160 Community Based Organizations that can assist you with a number of other issues you may be experiencing.

Customer Assistance Program (CAP)

Another grant to consider is the Customer Assistance Program (CAP.) To be eligible for CAP, your payment will be based on your income and household size, not usage. If you pay on time, in full, a portion of your back balance may be forgiven. The income guidelines for CAP are set at or below 150% of the Federal Poverty Income Guidelines.

Job Training & Career Guidance Program

If you're someone who wants to find a new career and get job training, but just don't have the income to do so, there's help. The Job Training & Career Guidance Program allows you to train for a career, not just a job. With this program you earn valuable skills and earn a certification and develop skills and obtain employment at a family-sustaining wage.

Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)

Many low-income families can't afford to pay their heating bills. This is where LIHEAP comes in. It's a federally funded program that provides assistance for heating bills. The income guidelines are set at or below 150% of the Federal Poverty Income Guidelines.

Direct Housing Natural Disaster Loans and Grants

If you've recently been affected by a natural disaster, loans and grants are available to assist qualified recipients. Funds are only available to the extent that funds are not provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). These particular funds are only available to counties that have been declared "a natural disaster" by the president.

Healthy Homes Demonstration Grants

If you have any safety or health hazards in your home and can't afford to have them remedied, the Healthy Homes Demonstration Program helps individuals and families take preventive measures to correct multiple safety and health hazards in the home environment that may produce serious diseases and injuries in children of low-income families.

Very Low-Income Housing Repair Loans and Grants

If you live in a rural area and are classified as a low-income rural homeowner, you may have the opportunity to make essential repairs to your home for the purpose of making your home safe and/or to remove health hazards to the family or the community.
