FSC Certified Wood Veneer For Architectural Projects
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Peter_Rodgers]Peter Rodgers

Flexible wood veneer certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is designed to assure the end user that the wood veneer has been harvested from well-managed forests. Everyone has heard about the plight of the vanishing rainforest. The Forest Stewardship Council is an organization that certifies that particular forests have been well managed, and also certifies that certain companies carry wood products from these certified, ecologically sustainable forests.

FSC-certified wood veneer comes from managed forests that are traceable from the time the logs are cut to the time the final project is installed. The wood veneer is verified by way of a C.O.C. or chain of custody claim on all invoices. For finished wood veneer to be truly FSC certified, it must be accompanied by a series of C.O.C. documents through the entire process.

When an architect decides to specify FSC wood veneer, there are several factors to take into account:

Designers and architects must become aware of which wood species are available with FSC certification before specifying this wood.

Most wood species around the world have not been FSC certified. These species might be qualified, should the FSC have the resources to evaluate them, but they are not officially certified by the FSC.

Once a species is specified for a particular project, the designer or project manager must allow extra time for the veneer supplier to obtain the FSC-certified wood veneer, as FSC-certified veneer sheets are rare; there are fewer on the market than non-FSC certified.

Some architects or designers prefer to specify premium grades of wood veneer. These grades of desired wood veneer sheets in specified sizes may not be available FSC certified. In order to work with FSC-certified wood veneer, designers and architects might have to specify a lower grade of wood veneer.

It is therefore advisable for architects and designers to make first and second choices in veneer specification, as the first choice of FSC-certified flexible sheet veneer may not be attainable in the time frame needed, or it may not be an economical choice.

It would be wise for architects and designers to consult with flexible wood veneer suppliers before specifying FSC wood veneer selection for a given project to prevent delays and other potential problems.

About 2% of all rain forest woods are harvested for the sheet veneer and lumber industries. However, wise stewardship of all forests is an important step in adding value to, and maintaining the natural integrity of the world's tropical forests.

Many architects and end users feel best about building with products, such as flexible wood veneer sheets, that are certified to be kind and responsible to the environment, and are ecologically sustainable. The Forest Stewardship Council certifies that certain flexible wood veneers were, in fact, harvested from well maintained forests. Architects and designers should be aware of the fact that very few wood species are available FSC certified, and should therefore make their sheet wood veneer specifications with this fact in mind.
