Radon Detectors
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Peter_Gitundu]Peter Gitundu

Did you know that two houses located next to one another may have totally different levels of radon? Well, in fact, you might be wondering where your neighbor got cancer. They probably inhaled radon right in their house. The unfortunate thing on this gas is that it's almost impossible to predict it's presence or concentration just like that. Therefore the only way to avoid it and its harmful effects is by using radon detectors.

Radon detector are available in different types for both long-term and short-term. However, the most common ones are the alpha-track devices. This basically relies on small sheets of polycarbonate plastic materials. What happens here is that alpha particles create tiny pockmarks when they come into contact with these sheets. The level of radon is then based on counting the the pockmarks. Nevertheless, this is analyzed in the laboratory.

Generally the concentration of this gas will vary day to day depending on different environmental factors. Therefore it's recommended for one to acquire a long-term detector since they're more reliable as compared to short-term ones. This is because they give the mean value of radon level and thus environmental factors may not be much of a problem.

Despite using radon detectors, there are other simple measures that we can take to avoid accumulation of this gas in our houses. Some of this measures include; installing functional ventilation systems in our basements, sealing the holes and cracks and basically making sure the house is well ventilated. We should also make sure that all the pipe joints are sealed off as required.
