You can choose from a variety of scents that reflect your personal tastes, using either essential oils or a commercially-prepared scent.

How to Use Candle Scents

There are several benefits to using commercially-prepared candle fragrances in your candles. Just be sure that if you're making gel candles, that you always use the scents that are designed specifically for gel, rather than using a homemade scent. If you are making specialty candles, such as those shaped like foods, then using a commercially-prepared scent can make your candle seem more like the real thing.

If you prefer to use essential oils for your candle fragrances, then you will need to experiment a little more with the amounts and combinations that you want to use. Remember to only add scents to wax that have been removed from the heat source, since each fragrance has a different flashpoint.

Where to Buy Scents

You can buy essential oils in most hobby shops, or you can purchase your candle fragrances online. One of the main benefits of purchasing your scents online is that you can buy the scents in bulk to save money, and even smaller amounts of fragrance are sold for less online than in your local shops.

As an added benefit of buying your candle fragrances online, the selection is often much larger than anything that you can find locally. You can make specialty candles that look and smell like cookies, malts and even fruits with specially- prepared commercial fragrances.

How Much to Add

When you want to use essential oils for your candles, then the amount of candle fragrance that you need to add will vary on the combination that you use, and the amount of wax that you have to scent. Most of the time, ten to fifteen drops of scent is enough to provide fragrance for about one pound of wax, but if you use particularly subtle scents, or if you want a stronger smelling candle, then you will need to add more.

With commercial candle fragrances, all you need to do is follow the directions that came with your scent. Remember that if you use the same scent repeatedly, then you won't be able to smell the candle as strongly.
