The Scoop on Cuno Water Filters
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Gordon_P_Hall]Gordon P Hall

Cuno water filters are made by 3M.  They offer products for businesses and homeowners.  Different models are available for those people with private wells and those that are serviced by a public treatment facility.  In this article, we look only at the effectiveness and cost of their models for those on a public waterline.

They call their home systems Aqua-pure.  It's a fairly effective system, but if MTBE is a problem in your area, most of their models will not address that problem.  Normally, MTBE can be tasted and smelled.  It is a gasoline additive that seeped into groundwater due to leakage from underground tanks.

You may have noticed tanks in your area being pulled up and replaced.  Apparently, the chemical is highly caustic, even though it was promoted as a "no-knock" ingredient.  It is no longer being used in gasoline, but is still present in the soil and groundwater.

Almost all Cuno water filters reduce chlorine, lead, cysts, THMs, VOCs, lindane, alachlor, Atrazine, benzene and TCE.  Those are the most common contaminants that we are faced with.  But, to be sure, you want to review the product performance data for each model.

There are other brands on the market that provide more effective contaminant removal at a lower cost.  For example, the system that we have in our kitchen cost $125 and replacement cartridges cost $48.  To get a comparable system Aqua-pure, we would have had to pay at least $350 and replacement cartridges cost $80.  The reason for this price difference is obvious, once you do a little research.

Cuno water filters are only sold through distributors.  That means that you are not only paying for the product, you are paying retail mark-up, so that the distributors can get their cut.  You will almost always save money when you buy direct from the manufacturer.

Aqua-pure makes systems for the whole house, the kitchen or the refrigerator.  They do not have a system that fits on your showerhead.  Recent research indicates that showering in unfiltered water may be more dangerous than drinking it.

You see, chemicals, like THMs, become vaporized in a hot shower.  So, we inhale them, along with the steam.  If you are feeling a little more tired than usual, kind of drowsy all the time, there may be a build-up of chloroform gas in your home.  Chloroform is one of the THMs.  Researchers have found that there is some level of the gas in most homes that have chlorinated water.  The cause, they say, is showering.

So, while Cuno water filters may protect you from some health hazards, they cannot be adapted to fit your showerhead.  At some point in the future, they may come up with a showerhead filter, but there's no need to wait.

The manufacturer that we buy from offers a special package when you purchase both a kitchen and a showerhead system at the same time.  Cuno water filters cost more and don't provide complete protection.  Why pay more, when you don't have to? If you have a few minutes to spare, please feel free to browse through my website.
