A Comparison of Marble and Granite For Home Work Surfaces

With many types, styles, designs and patterns available, marble can be an alternative to granite; but what are their differences?

Being composed primarily of feldspar, quartz and mica, granite boasts even more mineral content, giving it an even wider variation in design, colour and pattern. Granite has a high resistance to stains, scratches, acidic liquids and hot pans and kitchen utensils, making it perfect for kitchen surfaces!

Granite is incredibly long-lasting and durable, whilst at the same time a work of art and an impressive kitchen focal point.

Some kitchen assets can also be fashioned from granite, such as bread bins and cutting boards and especially with the latter; this is achievable given the high scratch resistance of this type of stone.

Marble is also an extremely beautiful type of stone although very different to granite. Being made mostly of calcite, marble has a low resistance to acidic foods such as; lemon, vinegar and tomatoes. Some cleaning liquids can also damage the surface of marble, so for a kitchen work surface, marble may not be the best choice.

In my opinion; this type of stone is suited best to bathroom surfaces, although as long as care is taken, this could still be a fair choice for a kitchen.

In a bathroom setting, marble can truly enhance the décor as it has much more exquisite patterns - soft and beautiful, with colours you can expect to see within this room. With this said, it is very important to note that the bathroom cleaners also contain substances that may harm your stone surface, so if marble is to be used in the bathroom, then always read the ingredients to mould removers, polishes and cleaners, as some of these products can damage a polished finish.

Granite is probably the most versatile out of these two types of stone. It can be used either indoors or outdoors, whereas marble can be damaged by natural weather and therefore has its limitations.

Granite and Marble for home surfaces can be purchased from HartGranite.co.uk. They are based in Broxbourne, on the border of Hertfordshire and Essex, but supply and install worktops and work surfaces to many locations throughout the UK.
