Doorbells - Everything You Need to Know
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Mark_D._Taylor]Mark D. Taylor

Doorbells are a wonderful device that helps greet visitors at your home and provides you with safety and convenience. Or it can be a device that constantly plagues your family as you grapple with faulty wiring or poor performing wireless devices. For this reason, it pays to get a good doorbell from the very start. We have found that homeowners are most happy with their results when they have considered the following before making their purchase:

1. What are your exact needs? Will you be able to run wires? If not, you will need a wireless model. Also, do you have an existing wired model that only needs an upgrade? If so, you can purchase wireless bell alarm add-ons that can work with the existing system. The purpose here is to find out exactly what you need the doorbell to do. Once you have decided this, you will have natural filters to help you with your decision process.

2. Wired vs. Wireless? Both models can work well in all kinds of homes. Wired doorbells offer consistent performance, but wireless models offer convenience. They can be moved around on a whim and are similarly priced to wired counterparts. If you decide to go with a wireless model, choose some of the ones that have multiple frequencies, this will reduce and in most cases eliminate any conflict with other wireless devices like car alarms and garage door openers.

3. Long range needed? If a wireless doorbell is needed, determine what range you will need for your house. Most wireless models have a range of 100 to 150 feet. This range is adequate for most homes, but multi-floor or large homes will want to have larger ranges. For these homes, it is best to go with a long range wireless doorbell. These can extend out to 450 feet. Also, determine if the wireless device will get a lot interference from the walls (especially metal)of your home between the doorbell button and the bell alarm? If this is the case, I would recommend a long range wireless device to reduce any possible performance issues.

4. Design Options? There are more design styles and options that can be discussed here. The important thing is to know that you can find whatever you are looking for to meet your home décor needs. In the past, wireless doorbells did not have as many design options, but recent manufacturers have added more and more designs so that you are now sure to find something that appeals to you.

5. Sound and Chimes Needs? Gone are the days of the simple buzzer sound or ding dong. New doorbells boast all kinds of chimes and sounds. In addition, you can add your own greetings, songs, and basically anything else you can think of to greet your guests. This feature is especially good around the holidays as trick or treaters love to hear the scary Halloween sounds and Christmas carol music can greet guests for Christmas Dinner parties. Simply put, you can get very creative with your greetings using many of today's doorbells.

These tips for buying doorbells are a good starting point towards finding your ideal home or office doorbell.
