Blinds in Berkshire, Verticals Discussed

VERTICAL BLINDS

Vertical blinds can be made from fabric, vinyl and even specialty materials like aluminum. Colors, patterns and textures are available is an amazing number of choices. Quite often, we only think in terms of size, color and fabric. As a result, you can end up unhappy with your blinds. However, if you realize that there are other things to consider, you will be in a position to make informed choices. This could eventually make the difference between being happy or not.

Whether you decide to have fabric or vinyl vertical blinds is obviously a personal choice. There are however, certain factors you need to take into account.

VINYL

Vinyl blinds are easy to clean and overall easier to keep clean. A quick wipe with a damp cloth is usually all that is needed.

Vinyl resists "wear and tear" better and has a better endurance to moisture.

Vinyl vertical blinds might be the better choice for doors to patios and pool areas.

FABRIC

Fabric vertical blinds can look nicer and create a softer effect. You have a choice of textured, plain or sheer material. If the window is in direct sun for long periods, fabric is a better choice.

On the other hand, fabric tends to retain odors. It also collects dirt and dust easier. If you or someone in the household suffers from asthma or other allergies, vinyl might be a better choice.

You will also have to wash or dry clean fabric vertical blinds periodically.

MOUNTING - Inside or Outside?

Inside mount:

With the inside mount, brackets are on the inside of the window frame. It doesn't matter whether the blinds are open or closed; all edges of the window frame are visible.

Outside mount:

If your window frame is not quite as attractive this is the better option. Brackets are on the outside of the window frame. With the blinds closed you can't seen any of the window frame. When the blinds are open, the frame will be exposed.

STACK POSITION

When blinds are open, the slats come together in what is called a 'stack'. The choice is yours whether you want the stack to the left or the right. You can also split the slats and have half to the left and half to the right. The split stack works especially well on big doors and windows. It is also nice if at times you want one part of the window open and the other part closed.

Consider all things before deciding. Once you have placed the order, you cannot change your mind. It is very annoying to discover too late that a different stack position would have worked better.

DRAW CONTROL

Standard Cord/Chain

The mechanism that allows you to open your vertical blinds is called the draw control. Two cords (or chains) hang from the head rail allowing you to open/close and tilt your blinds.

Child/Pet Safety Wand:

If you have children or pets, the wand (attached to the top of the blinds) is definitely a much better choice. Much safer because there is nothing a child or pet can get tangled in. Safe and easy to use the wand also blends in.

Even if you don't have kids or pets I would recommend the wand as it is more practical and modern. With either of the control options, you can choose where you want the controls to be.
