A Brisbane Electricians Advice on Safety in the Home
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Stuart_McCulloch]Stuart McCulloch

Our homes are filled with electrical appliances and tools for our comfort and convenience. When using these tools, we must always remember to take care and to follow these simple rules.

Avoid overloading power points

Putting many plugs in one socket is dangerous. It is called "piggy-backing". Use a power board or have a Qualified Electrician install an extra power point.

Protect power points

If there are young children in the home plug protectors should be placed on all power points.

Water conducts electricity!

Never touch electrical appliances with wet hands. Take extra care in the bathroom. Make sure hairdryers and shavers cannot fall into the bath or basin. Do not use electrical appliances or extension leads in wet conditions.

Faulty appliances

If you receive a tingle or a shock from a faulty appliance, disconnect it immediately. Throw it away or have it repaired by a qualified Brisbane electrician.

Leave these tasks to a licensed electrician:

=> Replacing or rewiring a plug, switch or power point

=> Repairing electrical appliances (eg irons, toasters, washing machines, etc)

=> Installing or altering fixed electrical wiring.

=> Installing a safety switch: all Queensland homes should have a safety

=> Switch to protect against electrical shock.

Simple jobs you can do yourself:

=> Changing an electric light bulb

=> Changing the starter in a fluorescent light fitting

=> Replacing a fuse

=> Resetting a circuit breaker or safety switch.

If in doubt, call a Qualified Electrician

It is not just your safety that you should consider when doing your own electrical work in the home. It is illegal and you could be fined. You also risk voiding your home insurance. Please don't take shortcuts with electricity, you not only risk your own life but it may be one of your loved ones! If in any doubt call a [http://www.qmate.com.au/]Qualified Electrician.
