How To Protect Your Home From Winter Hazards

As a home owner, especially in Michigan and Wisconsin where winter takes a toll year after year, you can do several things to avoid problems such as burst pipes, leaky roofs, and other structural defects caused by winter weather. Although your home may be insured against such events, planning ahead (especially in climates which have strong fluctuations in weather) is the best method for your family or business buildings.
To prevent ice dams from forming (these occur from heavy snow buildup melting during the daytime and refreezing at night) and eventually working their way under shingles and damaging ceilings and other parts of your home, you can do the following:
1. Keep gutters/down spouts free of snow, debris, and ice so snow can melt freely off the roof.
2. Try to keep the snow level on your roof down. Invest in a roof rake as this can be done safely from the ground.
3. Perform an evaluation of your home's attic insulation and ventilation.
To prevent pipes from freezing while you are away for extended periods of time, do not turn down your home's heat. In the long run, this could cost you thousands of dollars from damage compared with what you might save from reducing the heat during your vacation.
If for some reason your pipes would burst, ensure that you and your family or employees know how to shut off the water supply. This is important as it can minimize the damage that can be caused. Be especially careful in areas of standing water to prevent electric shock. The best thing is to call a professional plumber and also contact your homeowner's insurance agent immediately.
