Painting Hardwood Floors

Painting Hardwood Floors
By Marcus Peterson

Hardwood floors by themselves are classic and elegant. They add character, warmth and texture to rooms. With appropriate care, hardwood floors can last for generations.

While some may think it sacrilegious to paint designs on the wood, hiding the natural patterns and swirls, others find a way to do it and create a work of art in the end. And you can do the same too if you want to add more color and depth to a room.

Paint on Your Own

Preparation is key to a successful hardwood floor-painting project. And it starts with a well-thought-out design. If you have the concept on paper already, identify what you need. You may get other materials, but the most basic that you should have when doing this project are the following: latex paint (depending on the number of colors you need), primer, fine sandpaper, painter's tape, chalk line, measuring tape, paintbrushes, and roller.

Start the process by painting the floor area with two coats of the lighter color you are using. You must do this with a four-inch wide brush. Buy one that will not loose its bristles. It may be more expensive but you will have no problem with bristles shedding into the wet paint and ruining the finish.

Paint in the direction of the wood?s grain. Let the first coat to dry. Before applying the second layer, sand the floor lightly to make sure it will not flake or peel.

If your design includes patterns or drawings, mark them on the floor with pencil or chalk or something that you can easily correct or erase should you make a mistake. To make sure the colors of the different patterns do not bleed into each other, tape off the borders with painter?s tape or with one inch wide heavy duty masking tape. Apply the color you want. Two to three coats will be enough to last for a long time. But make sure that each coat dries thoroughly before applying the next one.
