Undermount Kitchen Sinks
By Jason Gluckman

Undermount kitchen sinks easily jive with modern designs. Its smooth look makes it visually appealing, and the way it is built into the kitchen allows for easier maintenance.

Undermount kitchen sinks are just one of the five types of kitchen installations. The other types are integral, self-rimming, rimmed and tiled in. Among these types, undermount kitchen sinks are the most difficult to install because it eliminates the upper ring of the kitchen sink. But as in other types of installations, the undermount fixture should match the material of the sink. It would then be good to consult with experts to check the applicability of the chosen sink installation.

Another name for an undermount kitchen sink is a recessed sink. Because this type of installation requires removal of the upper ring, it is important to ensure that the size of the hole where the kitchen sink will be placed will not create water leaks.

To begin the installation, an opening should first be traced on the countertop. The best way to do this is to place the sink upside down at the countertop and trace its edges.

The next step is to cut the sinkhole. For straight edges, a simple handsaw will do, but for curved edges, a keyhole saw may prove to work better. Once completed, the kitchen sink may already be inserted into the hole. The faucet can be attached to it once the sink is in place.

The last part of the installation is assembling the drain. Some kitchen sinks have directions on how to put the drain together. Just follow the instructions given in the manual. It would help to have a wrench and pliers ready because these will be necessary in tightening the screws of the drain.

Once in place, it is helpful to check to see if there are leaks in the installation. This is especially true for undermount kitchen sinks because they are prone to such defects because of the complexity of their structure.
