How To Keep Your Building Site Safe And Clean

Keeping your site safe - general safety precautions

Wear protective gear. This includes hardhats, to protect yourselves from swinging or falling equipment; goggles with eye shields to keep eyes safe from flying nails, screws, and other debris; gloves when working with fiberglass materials; faceguards, to shield the face and eyes if you are using power tools that can send sparks or debris; long pants; and hard-toed boots.

Be aware of chemical hazards. Building sites often contain chemicals found in varnishes, fiberglass, insulation, and others. If you are not working outside, make sure the workplace is ventilated with open doors and windows or fans. Proper safety equipment should be worn, including a face mask, to protect from inhaling any particles and harmful airborne materials. Make sure you read all the warning and hazard labels on the products, and follow protective steps.

Practice electrical safety. The electrical hazards of a building site can cause electrocution and fires, so make sure there are enough power sources to keep circuits from overloading. Use the shortest extension cords possible, and unless your power tools are double-insulated, all power tools should be properly grounded. All workers should wear rubber-soled shoes when working with electrical appliances, and all appliances and tools should be unplugged before working on or around them.

Be careful with power tools and machinery. There is a great deal of dangerous equipment on a building site, so make sure all tools and machines are in proper working order before using them. They should be regularly maintained and inspected to ensure safety. In addition, make sure no worker operates tools or machinery that he or she has not been properly trained to operate.

Practice common sense. A large part of keeping our building site safe is making sure you practice common sense. Post signs around dangerous areas, like overhead power lines or flying debris. Make sure no one walks under cranes that are lifting loads, and wear protective harnesses when working higher up. Use guardrails and barricades in the necessary places.

Keeping your site clean

As a general rule, a cleaner building site will be safer than one that is cluttered. Make sure materials are stacked properly in order to prevent sliding, falling, and collapsing. Clean up any spills as they happen, especially if the fluid is flammable. Secure power cords to the floor to prevent tripping. The best way to keep your site clean is to clean things up as you go.

A safe and clean work site will help to not only protect your workers and your equipment from injuries and harm, but it will also help to protect you from liability damages as well. Be sure to check with the OSHA regulations and practice proper safety precautions.
