Plywood Siding, The Underdog Alternative
By David Faulkner

Plywood siding is not a well-known option available in the home siding industry; however it is definitely worth looking into. Plywood siding is quite attractive, and once treated highly durable. Plywood siding can easily be painted allowing it to blend into nearly any neighborhood, or meet any design specification. Typically plywood siding is applied as overlapped panels lying perpendicular to one another.

When installing plywood siding it is very important to properly treat the plywood before installation. Treating, or prepping the plywood siding includes applying an appropriate waterproof sealant to the plywood in order to prevent any moisture from leaking into the plywood siding. When moisture leaks in the plywood siding several things happen. Its structural capacity is greatly diminished; as a result, it will no longer offer any margin of protection to the frame of your home. Aesthetically plywood siding is also damaged by moisture. Once moisture has entered the plywood siding it can cause the plywood to deform, bubble, and warp eventually causing pain to peel and the wood its self to rot.

When choosing plywood siding it is important to ensure that the plywood you choose is graded as being appropriate for use on the exterior of a home. It may be tempting to cut costs and choose a low-grade plywood, but going this route will ensure you have headaches later on. Low-grade plywood is simply not produced in a fashion that makes it appropriate for use outdoors. It is more susceptible to damage, and there is little you can do to mitigate moisture. An added bonus of getting a high-grade plywood siding is that it is much smoother than low-grade plywood; this will give you a more finished look, and increase the overall beauty of your home.

Plywood siding is the ideal exterior solution for a home of modern design. Its clean lines and easily painted surface allow it to transform nearly any home into a modern architectural marvel. Before deciding on plywood siding speak to a licensed contractor to evaluate its practicality for your region. Hot and humid regions are simply not suitable for plywood siding, as the moisture damage would be nearly impossible to avoid.

An added benefit is speaking to a contractor is that they will recommend somebody to professionally install your plywood siding. Because installation of plywood siding is so critical to preventing moisture damage it is recommended that you only choose a licensed contractor to handle the installation work for you. That way you will have a warrantee and the peace of mind should anything go wrong in the future.
