How to Beat Water Restrictions at Home
By Jim Dudra

Water restrictions are quickly becoming a way of life here in United States. It's no surprise that people have begun to look for ways to ease the effects of these devastating events. Starting at home, people can take simple steps in an effort to beat these water restrictions.

Fill a one liter soda bottle with about two inches of sand, and the rest with water. Place in your toilet tank (away from the operating mechanism). You'll save about 5 gallons per day/toilet.

Take shorter showers. Five minutes maximum. The average shower will use five to ten gallons of water a minute.

Install a low-flow showerhead. These are easy to find in any hardware store.

Switch from the hose and bucket car wash to a waterless car wash. These products save between 80 -140 gallons per use.

Store drinking water in the refrigerator versus going to the tap every time. This will help reduce wasted water.

Don't run the water while brushing your teeth, shaving, etc.

Periodically check your home for leaks. A good way to do this is to read your water meter, wait thirty minutes, and check again. If you find the number has changed you have a leak in the house.

Only run the dishwasher/washer when they are 100% full.

Don't use the toilet as an ashtray or trashcan.

Avoid letting water go down the drain. Always remember their may be another use for it (watering plants, household cleaning).
